ถือเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของสหราชอาณาจักร ซึ่งก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปีคศ. 1838 นับว่ามีอายุถึง 170 ปีเลยทีเดียว Westminster เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดของอังกฤษเมื่อนับรวมพื้นที่ของทั้ง 4 แคมปัสเข้าด้วยกันอันได้แก่ Cavendish, Marylebone และ Regent ทั้ง 3 แคมปัสนี้จะตั้งอยู่ในใจกลางกรุงลอนดอน ซึ่งอยู่ในย่านของสถานที่สำคัญ ๆ ของลอนดอน เช่น Regent’s Park, Oxford Street, BBC, Madame Tussaud’s, Marble Ach, British Library และอื่น ๆ ส่วนแคมปัสที่ 4 ตั้งอยู่ที่ Harrow ซึ่งห่างจากในตัวเมืองเพียง 20 นาทีโดยรถไฟ
University of Westminster นี้ได้รับอิทธิพลของชื่อมาจากพระราชวัง Westminster ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ใจกลางเมืองลอนดอนนั่นเอง หรือเรียกอีกชื่อนึงว่า ตึกรัฐสภาเวสต์มินสเตอร์ (Palace of Westminster หรือ Houses of Parliament หรือ Westminster Palace) เป็นสถานที่ที่สภาสองสภาของรัฐสภาแห่งสหราชอาณาจักร (สภาขุนนาง และสภาสามัญชน ) ประชุม พระราชวังตั้งอยู่บนฝั่งเหนือของแม่น้ำเทมส์ในนครเวสต์มินสเตอร์ของลอนดอน บะระห์ไม่ไกลจากพระราชวังไวท์ฮอลล์ ทำให้มหาวิทยาลัยนี้จะดูเก่าแก่และมีมนต์ขลังในเรื่องราว และประวัติศาสตร์มากมาย
