University of Newcastle (UON) มีประวัติอันยาวนานมากว่า 40 ปีนับตั้งแต่ ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี 1965 ปัจจุบันมีนักศึกษากว่า 40,000 คนซึ่งเป็นนักเรียนต่างชาติ ประมาณ 10% จากจำนวนนักเรียนทั้งหมด มีความเด่นดังทางด้านวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี และวิทยาศาสตร์คอมพิวเตอร์ที่สำคัญยังติดอันดับมหาวิทยาลัยดีเด่น อันดับที่ 61 ของภูมิภาคเอเซียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ อีกด้วย อาจารย์ผู้สอนและเจ้าหน้าที่ของมหาวิทยาลัยกว่า400 คนได้รับการฝึกฝนให้ดูแลเอาใจใส่นักเรียนเป็นอย่างดีคุณภาพ การเรียนการสอนจึงไม่ด้อยกว่ามหาวิทยาลัยอื่นๆในออสเตรเลียเลย UON นี้ตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Newcastle ซึ่งอยู่ไม่ห่างจากเมืองใหญ่อย่างซิดนีย์มากนักขับรถ ด้วยเวลาเพียง 2 ชั่วโมงเท่านั้น เมือง Newcastle เป็นอีกหนึ่งเมืองที่สงบเงียบ และเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวที่สำคัญของรัฐนิวเซาท์เวลส์ นักเรียนนักศึกษาส่วนใหญ่ จะชื่นชอบในบรรยากาศการเรียนการสอน และการได้ท่องเที่ยวล่องเรือไปดูปลาวาฬ และปลาโลมาจากPort Stephen ที่เมืองนี้ ที่สำคัญค่าครองชีพในการเรียน และอยู่ที่เมืองนี้ยังถูกกว่า การเรียนในเมืองใหญ่อย่างซิดนีย์ นักศึกษาสามารถประหยัดค่าใช้จ่ายได้มากเลยทีเดียว จุดเด่นอีกอย่างหนึ่งของมหาวิทยาลัยนี้ก็คือ มีระบบ แบ่งภาคการศึกษาแบบ 3 เทอมต่อปี ดังนั้นนักเรียนจึงสามารถเรียนจบได้เร็วขึ้น
