ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี 1852 โดยจากเดิมเป็นที่รู้จักในนาม “Bath School of Art” ซึ่งมีชื่อเสียงเป็นอย่างมาก ในสาขาวิชาด้านศิลปกรรมศาสตร์แขนงต่างๆ ต่อมาปี 1975 จึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “Bath College of Higher Education” โดยมุ่งเน้นการเรียนการสอนในสาขาวิชาศึกษาศาสตร์และครุศาสตร์เป็นหลัก จึงทำให้มีชื่อเสียงในแขนงนี้เป็นอย่างมาก
และต่อมาในปี 2005 จึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยอย่างเต็มภาคภูมิภายใต้ชื่อ “Bath Spa University” โดยตั้งชื่อตามที่ตั้งของมหาวิทยาลัย ซึ่งอยู่ในแคว้นของ Bath Spa นั่นเอง และมีสาขาวิชาเรียนอันหลากหลายเพิ่มมากขึ้นอีกด้วย ทั้งในระดับ Undergraduate และ Postgraduate
ในปี 2006 ได้รับการจัดอันดับให้เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่มีความทันสมัยในด้านอุปกรณ์การเรียนการสอนยังประโยชน์ให้นักศึกษา มากที่สุดแห่งนึงในอังกฤษลำดับที่ 5 กับ “The 5th Best Modern University in the UK โดย “The Sunday Times University Guide” / ปี 2006 ได้รับการจัดอันดับให้เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยด้านการศึกษาและครุศาสตร์ที่มีชื่อเสียงและใหญ่ที่สุดลำดับที่ 6 ของอังกฤษ / และล่าสุดกับความภาคภูมิใจของมหาวิทยาลัย กับการถูกจัดอันดับให้เป็นมหาวิทยาลัย Top 10 มหาวิทยาลัยที่ดี่สุด 10 อันดับต้นๆของอังกฤษ สาขาศิลปกรรมศาสตร์ 2 ปีซ้อน คือปี 2012 และ 2013 นั่นเอง

ที่ตั้ง Bath Spa University
Bath Spa University ตั้งอยู่ที่เมืองบาธ ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากลอนดอนไปทางตะวันตก 156 กม.ใช้เวลาเพียงไม่ถึง2ชั่วโมงและจากบริสตอลไปทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ 21 กิโลเมตร ซึ่งถือว่าใกล้มากเพียงแค่ไม่ถึง 20 นาทีเท่านั้น
ตัวเมืองบาธตั้งอยู่ในหุบเขาของแม่น้ำเอวอนในบริเวณที่มีน้ำพุร้อนธรรมชาติที่เป็นที่ตั้งถิ่นฐานของโรมัน ผู้สร้างโรงอาบน้ำโรมัน (Roman Bath) ตั้งชื่อเมืองว่า “Aquae Sulis” สมัยนั้นเมืองได้ถูกสร้างจากหินบาธที่เป็นหินสีเหลืองนวล เมืองบาธได้รับฐานะเป็นเมืองมรดกโลกในปี ค.ศ. 1987 และมีโรงละคร, พิพิธภัณฑ์และสิ่งสำคัญทางวัฒนธรรมและทางการกีฬา ที่ทำให้กลายเป็นเมืองที่ดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวโดยมีนักท่องเที่ยวมากถึง 1-3 ล้านคนต่อปีเลยทีเดียว
