The University of Northampton ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี 1924 ภายใต้ชื่อ Northampton Technical College และได้รับการแต่งตั้งให้เป็นมหาวิทยาลัยอย่างสมบูรณ์แบบเมื่อปี 2005
มหาวิทยาลัย ตั้งอยู่ในเมือง Northampton ซึ่งเป็นเมืองร่มรื่น น่าอยู่ ค่าครองชีพไม่แพงนัก อีกทั้งอยู่ห่างจากเมืองใหญ่อย่าง London และ Cambridge เพียง 1 ชม เท่านั้น
มหาวิทยาลัย มี 2 วิทยาเขต คือ
- Park Campus เป็นวิทยาเขตหลักที่อยู่ใกล้กับ local shopping area, bank, shops ซึ่งสะดวกสบายกับนักศึกษาเป็นอย่างมาก
- Avenue Campus เป็นวิทยาเขตที่เปิดสอนสาขาวิชา Arts, Design, Technology, Architecture และ Performing Arts โดยมี studio workshop ไว้อำนวยความสะดวกในการเรียนของนักศึกษา
